What happens to a pot here

01 / 08Pushing the air out. Trapped bubbles will burst the pot in the kiln, so this part is not optional.

02 / 08The clay has to run true before it can be anything. Hands braced, elbows locked, until it stops fighting.

03 / 08Thumbs down through the middle to set the floor. Too thin here and there is no pot to lift.

04 / 08The wall comes up between finger and knuckle. A few passes, each one taller and thinner than the last.

05 / 08The belly is pushed from inside and the lip is collared and trued. This is where it becomes a particular pot.

06 / 08Turned over on the wheel and pared back. A foot ring is cut so the pot sits light rather than flat.

07 / 08First firing. It goes in raw and comes out hard, porous, matte, and still completely colourless.

08 / 08Glaze goes on dull and chalky. The kiln does the rest, and the colour only exists once it has cooled.

Who runs the studio

Tanjong Clay Studio is run by Wei Ling. She has been making pots for seven years. She teaches at the wheel, runs a glazing workshop once a month, and throws to order for cafes.

What Wei Ling would rather tell you herself

Seven years at the wheel, and fees have never been posted on a webpage. Here is what is settled, and the few things she wants to hear from you first.

Have you taught people who have never touched clay?

Mostly, yes. The classes are built for first-timers, and the wheel is the part everyone assumes is hard.

What does a class cost?

Message her with which class and how many sessions, and she will send you the price. It depends on both, which is why there is no number here.

When do classes run?

The glazing workshop is monthly. Wheel-throwing dates change, so ask her for the current one rather than read a stale one here.

Can you make our cafe’s tableware?

Yes, she takes cafe commissions. Send the shape, the count and the date you need it by, and she will tell you what is possible.

What do I need to bring?

She will tell you before you come. Message her, because the answer changes with what you are making.
